Pronaps

Pronaps are naps typically 40m in length intended to be taken during the REM peak in order to gain more REM than a traditional 20m nap may allow. This 40m time is longer than the recommended nap length of 20m, but there is a lot of evidence supporting the success of this type of nap, given the correct conditions.

The correct conditions stipulate that the sleeper will have already met their SWS need in previous sleeps, meaning none should be present in the pronap. This is important because SWS is difficult to wake from, and typically begins at about 25m into sleep. This provides a solid 40m of time that can be up to 100% REM in the best cases. This is notably highly ideal for lucid dreamers. If one will not have met their SWS need in time for a pronap, or a pronap is scheduled outside of the REM Peak, the pronap would not be recommended.
