Alarm Optimization

  1. Keep each alarm device away from your bed so that you are required to get out of bed to turn it off. Failing to do this is the biggest cause of oversleeps due to zombie-mode.
  2. It's very important to use more than one device, since if that device fails, you likely won't wake up.
  3. Across those multiple devices, set multiple alarms to go off at 0, 1, 2, 5, 10, 15, 20m after wake.
  4. Take advantage of location-based alarms such as barcode alarms. For example, you could place a code in the fridge (putting you in a position to easily drink a glass of cold water), or in the shower (to encourage a quick wakeup shower). In any case, forcing yourself to walk around before the alarm can be turned off is helpful for avoiding zombie-mode oversleeps.
  5. Turn off the alarms after they each go off, don't turn them off all at once.
  6. Set your primary alarm to be upbeat music that makes sure you wake up with the feeling of being able to do anything!
Popular app options for alarms are "Alarmy", "I Can't Wake Up", and "Sleep as Android". Ask about what different people use if you want something special. If you have a person that could wake you, make a backup alarm that's loud enough for them to hear, and make sure they know to wake you no matter what.
